John Joseph Gotti Jr. is an American gangster and head of the Gambino criminal family in New York. He ordered and helped organize the murder of Gambino Paul Castellano in December 1985 and took over the family soon after, becoming the leader of America's most powerful criminal organization. Gotti and his brothers grew up in poverty and had to engage in a life of crime from an early age. Gotti quickly became one of the crime family's biggest income generators and a protector of the Gambino family, Aniello Dellacroce, operating outside of the Queens's Ozone Park area. After the FBI charged members of Gotti's crew with drug trafficking, Gotti began to fear that he and his brother would be killed by Castellano for drug trafficking. As this fear continued to grow and amid growing disagreement over the direction of the criminal family, Gotti organized the murder of Castellano.
