I read in a Goldwyn biography Joel described as "strapping 6ft 2". In Virginian he looked a bit shorter than Sonny Tufts. Joel himself said of his height, "It was still an era of medium-sized heroes and, at Six-Foot-Three, I looked like the community flagpole"
