Patricia Lee Smith is an American singer-songwriter, songwriter, songwriter and poet who became an influential part of the New York punk rock movement with her debut album Horses in 1975. Known as the "Punk Poet Winner", Smith incorporated rock and poetry into his work. Her best-known song is "Because the Night", which was co-composed with Bruce Springsteen. It peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 and at number five in the UK. In 2005, Smith was appointed Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. In 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On November 17, 2010, Smith won the National Book Award for his memoir Just Kids. The book holds a promise she made to her former roommate and longtime colleague Robert Mapplethorpe. She is ranked 47th on Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Artists list announced in December 2010 and also received the 2011 Polar Music Award.
